Music and urban culture festival Tallinn Music Week (TMW), celebrating its ten-year anniversary on 2-8 April, presents quarter of a hundred restaurants and cafes in the capital, cooking workshops and home dinners with Mexicans through the TMW Tastes programme. The menu of the TMW pop-up bar is planned by Renard Coffee Shop & Raba Peet.
The TMW pop-up bar that has become one of the most popular hotspots among the festival’s visitors in the last four years will again open its doors at the centrally located Design and Architecture Gallery. Renard Coffee Shop will offer a quality coffee from Scandinavia’s top micro-roasteries and culinary duo Raba Peet will take care of the taste experiences.
Keit Lillemäe, one of the founders of Renard Coffee Shop, a small coffee bar with a big spirit that operated near Telliskivi Creative City until January of this year, promises to create a lovely meeting place for the festival’s visitors: “TMW has always been a very inspirational festival for me. This time, the expectations are especially big and challenging. Together with my sister Kadi Maidre as the culinary duo Raba Peet we promise that nobody shall leave the cafe with an empty stomach.”
In addition to the pop-up bar, there are 25 eating and drinking spots in the TMW restaurants selection which offer special TMW menus carefully crafted by their head chefs as well as special offers to the owners of the festival passes.
Among others, the restaurants presented include the pre-eminent plant-based restaurant Von Krahli AED, healthy vegan buffet BlissTray, cozy cake shop & cafe Ristikheina Kohvik, brasserie restaurant and Golden Era-style cocktail bar Tabac, creative “fusion-confusion“ restaurant Kolm Sibulat, coffee pantry KOKOMO and a unique beer shop TapTap at Rotermann Quarter, restaurant Korsten, Armastus ja Hea Toit based at the Tallinn Creative Hub, and restaurant Sfäär with rooms inspired by the aesthetic universe of Estonian artist Tõnis Vint.
As part of the TMW and in cooperation with the Estonian Refugee Council, there will be cooking workshops followed by dinners “Let’s get to know each other!” held in the demo kitchen at Balti Station Market. Knowledgeable nutritionists can participate in sustainable brunches by Korilase Köök and fans of the Latin American kitchen can join home dinners “Taco night with Mexicans”. More info about special dinners on TMW website.
All TMW 2018 passes include special offers at the TMW Tastes restaurants. Clients of festival’s presenter Telia get a 20% discount on all pre-sale tickets and passes.
The project “Let’s get to know each other!” is financed by the Asylum, Migration and Integration Fund and the Estonian Ministry of the Interior.
Music and urban culture festival Tallinn Music Week (TMW), taking place for the tenth time on 2-8 April, has added a new music night by FatCat’s 130701 imprint and Japan Sound Portrait project on 6 April at Loomelootsik house to its concert programme.
The TMW jubilee edition´s music programme on 5-7 April showcases almost 260 artists from 30 countries. The whole schedule of the music programme is available on the TMW website.
British label 130701, who has presented their artists at TMW festivals before, is now going to join forces with Japan Sound Portrait, a project by BBC Radio Three host Nick Luscombe and film director and Japanologist Neil Cantwell. Together, they will present the adventurous new music night on the second floor of Loomelootsik at Sadama subdistrict.
The 130701 artists include their latest signing, Swedish-Iranian pianist and composer Shida Shahabi, cello-playing explorer Resina, and an artist crossing organised electronical glitches with orchestral elements Emilie Levienaise-Farrouch. Japan Sound Portrait is represented by Hatis Noit, a Japanese vocalist deconstructing Western Classical, Japanese folk and nature’s own ambience atmosphere. In addition to these artists, the audience can also enjoy the awarded composer of electroacoustic music Simon Vincent and experimental harp-looper laboratory by the Estonian artist Liis Viira aka Liz Wirestring.
130701 maps the edges of the post and modern classical genre and has been described by the British music web Drowned In Sound as “something of a blueprint outlet for instrumental based musicians worldwide whose creations don’t quite fit safely into any genre or roster”. Its roster has included, among others, post-minimalism composer Max Richter, piano techniques’ experimenter Hauschka, who also performed at the TMW last year, and Icelandic composer Jóhann Jóhannsson, who recently passed away. Japan Sound Portrait is a joint Japanese music project by BBC Radio Three host Nick Luscombe and film director and Japanologist Neil Cantwell.
The 130701 and Japan Sound Portrait showcase takes place at Loomelootsik – a small limestone building situated at Lootsi street 8 at Tallinn city centre that used to house Tam Gallery and restaurant Neh. Since the beginning of this year, the first floor of the building with beautiful art pieces on the walls belongs to home restaurant ANNO and the second floor has a music studio and creative spaces.
Tickets for the TMW 2018 130701 / FatCat Records & Japan Sound Portrait new music night are available for 12 euros at Piletilevi. Tickets cost 15 euros at the venue on the concert night.
Access to the concert is guaranteed with the TMW 2018 Festival Pass, Conference + Festival pass and Priority Pass. The TMW passes can be purchased from the web store.
The TMW music programme on 5-7 April showcases almost 260 artists from 30 countries at almost 20 clubs and concert venues in Tallinn. The whole schedule of the TMW 2018 festival is available on the website.
The music and city culture festival Tallinn Music Week that celebrates its 10-year jubilee on 2-8 April also features a film programme. During the festival week, five documentaries will be screened at “Sõprus” Cinema, covering topics from the natural environment and visions of the post-capitalist world to the heroes of the post-rock’n’roll era. Film screenings will be introduced by their authors and main characters as well as film critics.
TMW Films programme opens on Monday, 2 April with An Inconvenient Sequel: Truth to Power, a sequel to the sensational documentary An Inconvenient Truth that was released a dozen years ago and featured Al Gore’s lectures on the environment. The environment is also in the centre of Chasing Coral, a film with astonishing scenery that explores whether and how it is still possible to save the coral reefs – the underwater miracles dying at record speed. The vast human flow of our times is mapped in Human Flow, directed by Ai Weiwei, one of the most vocal dissidents in China and a superstar of modern art.
The programme also features two documentaries on larger-than-life culture hackers: The Goodiepal Equation on the millionaire musician, artist and futurist Goodiepal van den Dobbelsteen, and More Than Life with a message of individualism on the left side of the norms from the last real Estonian rockstar, the frontman of Psychoterror Freddy Grenzmann.

An Inconvenient Sequel: Truth to Power (2017)
Remember the year 2006? It had gotten so bad in terms of climate change that a whole film was put together from the former presidential candidate Al Gore’s lectures. An Inconvenient Truth became a sensation, educating, irritating and bringing together millions all over the world together for debate, rounding it up with an Academy Award for the best documentary feature. What kind of an impact did it all have and has anything changed since Gore asks a dozen years later in the appropriately-titled sequel An Inconvenient Sequel.
Tuesday, 3 April at 9 pm
The Goodiepal Equation (2017)
The environment is going down the drain and much of our culture has become numb entertainment for the masses. Do not worry, as along comes a self-titled renaissance-man, musician, artist, culture hacker and futurist Goodiepal. A man who hid money in the packaging of his albums. The film is as crazy and weird as its titular character – in the best possible sense. This is an unconventional portrait of an unconventional man, with the ability to cause both admiration and alienation, often at the very same time. By the way, during his travels all across Europe, Goodiepal also visits our very own Kumu art museum in Tallinn.
The author of the movie is Sami Sänpäkkilä, boss of the Finnish record label Fonal Records.
Wednesday, 4 April at 9 pm
Human Flow (2017)
While Europe still grapples with immigration, this is only a small part of a growing global refugee crisis. Millions leave their homes, be the reason decaying environment, war, poverty or just the promising call of a better life elsewhere. Ai Weiwei, one of the most vocal dissidents in China, itself the frontrunner of instate migration, and a superstar of modern art paints an epic yet thoughtful picture of the vast human flow. To make this overarching and truly global film, the crew travelled through 23 countries.
Thursday, 5 April at 7 pm
Chasing Coral (2017)
A decade and a half ago, Pixar’s Finding Nemo awed both the young and the old with its depiction of an astonishing underwater world. This beautiful animation might only be a fantasy in the near future though, as the world’s seas are in great trouble due to human activity, and the corals are dying at unprecedented speed. It was just a year ago the largest coral in the world, the Great Barrier Reef, was cautioned to be in a terminal condition. In this film filled with mesmerising images, a team of scientists, divers and photographers set out to discover, if and how these underwater miracles might be saved.
Friday, 6 April at 7 pm
More Than Life (2018)
Freddy Grenzmann is the last Estonian rockstar. He is a poet and a singer in the punk-rock band Psychoterror. The term rockstar stands for a phenomenon that is outside the norms of tradition and is larger than life. What can be said about Freddy is that he is not normal neither on stage nor in life.
His creation and life are the same. He seems to be someone with everything always at stake, constantly walking on the edge. What makes Freddy interesting is not social or textual love for the game, but the quantity he has put into the game, the probability of losing oneself totally and the depth of indicative humane or metaphysical anguish. This is a story about the last rockstar and poet, his work and anatomy of a punk band.
The cast includes members of the band, Freddy Grenzmann, Lauri Leis, Margus Müil, Sven Liba, Sven Kimmel and special quest stars Hasso Krull, Koit Raudsepp, Marko Mäemets, Marko Mägi, Raul Saaremets, Raul Velbaum, Siim Nestor, Valner Valme, Villu Tamme and others.
Authors: Indrek Spungin and Taavi Arus

The gallery evening with extended opening hours called Tallinn Tuesday presents exhibitions from Estonian and international artists, guided tours and musical performances. As part of the TMW Arts, the Estonian art future talents will be introduced and the public can vote their favourite.
TMW Arts kicks off on Tuesday, April 3rd at 5-9 pm with a gallery evening called Tallinn Tuesday that includes a special programme and extended opening hours. The participating galleries are Gallery Positiiv, Okapi Gallery, EKA Gallery, Temnikova & Kasela Gallery, and Vaal Gallery. The programme includes a variety of exhibitions introducing new projects by both Estonian and international artists. There will be guided tours at the galleries throughout the evening; in addition, visitors can meet the gallerists and artists as well as enjoy musical performances.
Andres Teiss’ street photography exhibition ‘Being. Coming. Going’ is on view at Gallery Positiiv on Roo street. The artist, mainly know as a press photographer, describes his relationship with photography: “Pictures from different moments of life have been following me my whole conscious life. Maybe it is my way to cope with the surrounding chaos.” In addition to Teiss’ exhibition, visitors can also see and hear a sound installation by Taavi Tulev at the gallery on Tallinn Tuesday.
The joint exhibition by Anonymus Boh and Taje Tross, presented at the Okapi Gallery in Tallinn Old Town, shows large-scale photographic panoramas from the series ‘Multiverse Realities’. The works address the subcultures and communities that parallel the mainstream of our society, and the aims and behavioural patterns of which create a basis for completely new communities. On Tallinn Tuesday, there will be a performance at the gallery by Risto Puurunen, a member of the Finnish avant-garde pop group Cleaning Women.
The exhibition ‘Sticky Moment’ by Czech artists Anna Slamova and Marek Delong is open to visitors at the EKA Gallery near the Freedom Square. The works of the duo mainly address different emotional expressions and their acceptability in art. On Tallinn Tuesday, the exhibition will be introduced by EKA gallerist Keiu Krikmann.
The international group exhibition ‘Any body suspended in space will remain in space until made aware of its situation’, curated by Margot Samel, is on view at Temnikova & Kasela Gallery. The exhibition explores the language of cartoons in the context of contemporary art trends and trans-media identity policy. In addition to the Estonian stars Kris Lemsalu and Priit Pärn, the participating artists include Ella Kruglyanskaya from Latvia, Rhys Coren from the UK and Jonathan Ehrenberg, Emily Mae Smith and Ken Tisa from the United States. On Tallinn Tuesday, the exhibition will be introduced by Lilian Hiob from Temnikova & Kasela Gallery.
The roundup of Tallinn Tuesday is finalised at 9 pm at Vaal Gallery with a solo exhibition ‘Mercy’ by painter Mauri Gross. The artist describes the exhibition and its title: “The word mercy is so all-embracing that talking about it would take the force from it – the fig leaf falls from the loins and the remaining does not matter. Rather, the focus should be on fine-tuning, to support the inner monologue of the exhibition and to get a visual experience through minimalism and the overly narrative title.” On Tallinn Tuesday, the artist will be present at the gallery and there will be a guided tour of the exhibition.
All these exhibitions will remain open after Tallinn Tuesday and can be visited at the galleries’ regular opening hours during TMW week, from Wednesday, 4 April, to Sunday, 8 April.

As part of the European Keychange project two tough female Icelandic artists are joining the programme: Fever Dream and Hildur. Femme-powered horror rapper Fever Dream, inspired by both Peaches and Tyler, the Creator, challenges patriarchy and calls herself “the champagne of Iceland”. Hildur, a multi-faceted rising pop star with a promising solo career that is spiked with an Icelandic Music Award for Pop Song of the Year 2017, is just as passionate in her fight for equal rights. Akua Naru, a rapper whose music career started in the Pentecostal congregation in Connecticut, has gained attention with her ability to integrate historical narratives into her music with unmatched eloquence and criticism of gender and race stereotypes. The Saint Petersburg duo tema kresta preaches a unique “socialism of the scriptures” avoiding capital letters as their existence itself supposes division by significance. From Moscow comes the unpredictable female trio Mirrored Lips, a fascinating crossover of poetry, free jazz and hardcore punk.
Högni from Iceland, known as a member of GusGus and Hjaltalin will present his new solo album “Two Trains”, embracing the spirit of the original European avant-garde. Whilst his compatriot, a d’n’b and ambient producer Subminimal dives into deep groove and dark sub-base, then Belgium’s finest indie rock band Intergalactic Lovers plays with the formulas of classic postpunk.
One of the favourites of the world’s jazz stages, Israeli duo Maya Belsitzman & Matan Ephrat demonstrate virtuous cello and vocal abilities, the Belarus group Shuma a symbiosis of electronic music and pagan songs, and the Danish death metal monster BAEST a raging sound of the ‘buzzsaw’ guitar and windmill headbanging skills.
Maria Minerva, a producer, writer and environmental advocate will arrive in her native Estonia from the US with her ever-evolving concepts and sounds. Maria was named one of the seminal Los Angeles artists by The Guardian in 2017. Among the Estonian additions to the programme is the post-genre maverick Mart Avi, the favourite of TMW’s international delegates last year, as well as Regret – now based in the UK at hacking the drag, pop and punk culture and the popular folk band Curly Strings. From the very lively Estonian hip-hop scene the rapper Seaduskuulekus and producer Shromik will present their solo projects. Also among the Estonian artists: Girls In Pearls – a synthpop group and semi-finalist of the Estonian national selection for Eurovision, the soulpop band Rake, the folk act Duo Malva & Priks with their thick and electronically seasoned tunes, the internationally acclaimed Children’s Choir Ellerhein and many others.
TMW 2018 is curated by a wide range of collaborators, including some new showcases and venues. The dark music festival Beats From The Vault displays the selection of artists from industrial to drone, Berlin XJAZZ Festival presents their line-up of Estonian and international jazz artists, Blues Estonia agency offers an assortment of blues and rock combos, Estonian Choral Association a lineup of our finest choirs. Sveta bar is the venue for juke and footwork showcase Booty Powder whilst the legendary KuKu Art Club hosts the two-day art pop spectacle CryptoMarket.
The traditional TMW co-organizers on board are Raadio 2, Viljandi Folk, Üle Heli Festival, Manka Boutique Pop Festival, World Clinic, Intsikurmu Festival, Weekend Festival, Live Nation Baltics, Estonian Funk Embassy, Russian Theatre, Fenno-Ugria, Damn.Loud Agency in cooperation with the Finnish Tuska festival as well as the Latvian Positivus festival with I Love You Records label. Also in the line-up will be hip-hop and d’n’b stages and two of the festival’s showcases will be presented by Telia.

The tenth edition of the new music and city culture festival Tallinn Music Week (TMW), unveils the first speakers along the core agenda of its Creative Impact conference. The two-day conference, taking place on 6th and 7th April at Tallinn Creative Hub (Kultuurikatel) will focus on the future of music, new economy, better cities, and design thinking. TMW 2018 is presented by Telia.
TMW 2018 Creative Impact conference will be opened on 6th April by the President of Estonia Kersti Kaljulaid
TMW 2018 Festival + Conference Pass is available for €175 until 1st February (included).
The previously mainly music-focused TMW conference has looked in depth into the added value of creativity, as a result of which the festival has framed four lead topics for the jubilee edition’s conference, namely the future of music, new economy, better cities, and design thinking. Civic initiative, gender politics, future skills and sustainable development will also be the commonly occuring keywords.
The digitalisation-based new economy has thrown us into global competition, which simply calls for design thinking. Under the leadership of Jane Oblikas, the former CEO of the Estonian Design Centre, TMW has assembled a special design thinking block, featuring both inspiring speakers as well as practices like designing the future vision of Estonia’s easternmost city Narva. Among others, the muscle of design thinking will be trained by Arne van Oosterom, the founder of the DesignThinkers Academy, the internationally acclaimed creative business school Hyper Island, and nudging expert Sille Krukow.
As for the future of cities, the conference will delve into what makes cities competitive and how to measure the quality of public spaces. Among others, speakers on this topic include Elka Gotfryd of non-profit organisation Project for Public Spaces, who has been active in Jerusalem and New York in the fields of placemaking and community planning, and urbanist Teele Pehk, CEO of the Estonian Cooperation Assembly.
A city’s breadth of its arts and nightlife scenes can often be the factors that make urban life exciting and enjoyable. The founder of the non-profit initiative Creative Footprint Lutz Leichsenring along Amsterdam’s first nachtburgemeester – or night mayor – Mirik Milan will speak up against gentrification. The topic will be suitably introduced by Sound Diplomacy’s presentation of the “A Guide to Managing Your Night Time Economy” that will see the light of day during the TMW conference.
Estonia might be the first country to offer cryptocurrency as a way to reward its e-residents. Talking about the possibility of Estcoin and its future plans will be Kaspar Korjus, the managing director of the e-Residency program who leads the Forbes “30 Under 30“ list in the field of Technology and Finance.
As part of the international Keychange Project which aims to empower women to transform the music industry, 60 female musicians and creative industry professionals gather to participate in the special Creative Lab, which runs alongside the conference. The programme is supervised by business management mentor MBE Remi Harris and consultancy specialist Tamara Gal-On.
Music-based panels will also clear the status of the long-awaited copyright reform and the future of the European music industry, analyze new sources of revenue for the digital age and map out emerging markets in Asia and the former socialist states.
In addition to the creative industry analyses and solution-based practices, the conference also offers inspirational stories by creative minds across cultures and generations.
The president of Estonia Kersti Kaljulaid will open the TMW 2018 Creative Impact conference at the Talinn Creative Hub on 6th April.
The complete programme of the TMW 2018 conference and festival will be published gradually during February and March.
