TMW conference Creative Impact to put spotlight on big European questions and innovation across industries

The new music and urban culture festival Tallinn Music Week (TMW) taking place from 27th March to 2nd April will shine the spotlight on big European questions, innovation across industries, the case study on the Moomins brand and an inspirational story of the ballet bringing strength to one of Africa’s biggest slums. How will sharing economy, AI and digital nomadism unlock the potential of Europe, is the question for the panel on future industries. The two-day conference Creative Impact will be held at the Russian Cultural Centre and Nordic Hotel Forum on Friday 31st March and Saturday 1st April.

How and why could the EU Commission support musical creativity in a similar scheme as the very successful support for European cinema? At the opening panel, Estonian Minister of Culture Indrek Saar will be joined by Barbara Kessler from the DG Education and Culture, Juhan Lepassaar, the Head of Cabinet of EU vice president Andrus Ansip and Anna Hildur, Chair of European Music Export Exchange. Moderator Damien McGuinnes, the Berlin correspondent of BBC will also lead the discussion to how post-Brexit, can Europe keep Britain’s pop powerhouse involved.

In the light of Estonia’s upcoming stint at the helm of the EU Council, we need to have a sharp look into all things to do with the future digital economy. Sharing economy, robotics, AI, big data and digital nomadism – can the Digital Single Market unlock the potential of Europe, is the question for the panel on future industries to be introduced by a keynote from Estonia’s new CIO Siim Sikkut. The angel investor and start-up mentor Tak Lo, founder of Funderbeam Kaidi Ruusalepp, and Takashi Katsuragi of Rakuten, the largest e-commerce site in Japan, will join the discussion.

Among the inspiring case studies, we so love at TMW is the story of Moomin from Finland as the 3rd most licensed brand in the world will take yet another leap shortly with the new Moomin museum at Tampere Hall and a big budget new TV series involving Oscar-winning Steve Box. Pauliina Ahokas, Managing Director of Tampere Hall and Virpi Immonen, music supervisor of the film will shed the light.

The story of Kenya’s Slum Ballet, told by actress and founder of SAFE Ghetto theatre Krysteen Savane and founder of Anno’s Africa Bee Gilbert is a moving reminder of how creativity can be a powerful tool of social inclusion and open up new horizons for kids from harsh neighbourhoods.

The major part of the conference will as always give hands-on insights into the music industry like the producers and songwriters in spotlight session with Mandy Parnell, an award-winning mastering engineer for a wide variety of artist including Brian Eno, Sigur Ros and Bjork.

Among the previously announced speakers are Amy Lamé, the City of London’s first ever Night Czar, influential pop culture theorist Simon Reynolds, the founder member of the pioneering industrial group Einstürzende Neubauten Alexander Hacke and musician, and co-founder of Love Parade Danielle de Picciotto, the senior director of programming of the KEXP radio station Kevin Cole, and many others.

In addition to panels and talks TMW includes more new possibilities for direct business contacts and curated networking. For the first time there is a public application for speed-dating and thematic mentoring sessions by music journalists, publishers and producers. Creative hack in cooperation with DIGIX will come up with ideas and concepts for digital tools in music industry and new solutions for music education.

The president of Estonia Kersti Kaljulaid will open the TMW conference at the Russian Cultural centre on 31st March at 10 to be followed by the head of Nordea Estonia Gerd Müller and Head of TMW Helen Sildna. The conference will take place on 31st March and 1st April from 10 to 17 at two venues: Russian Cultural Centre and Nordic Hotel Forum.

The full schedule of the TMW conference will be published next week.

Top chef Peeter Pihel cooks with “best before” ingredients at Tallinn Music Week

As a part of the urban culture festival Tallinn Music Week (TMW), a new Kärbes Kitchen & Bar in Vaba Lava premises will hold Trash Cooking dinners on March 29th and 30th, with the overall aim of informing the public about smart and sustainable use of food waste. The author of this dinner concept is Peeter Pihel – the sous chef of Swedish restaurant Fäviken Magasinet. Of each dinner ticket, 5 Euros will be donated to Estonian Food Bank charity aimed towards children living below the subsistence level.

Peeter Pihel has launched Pädaste Manor’s restaurant that has been recognized multiple times as the best restaurant in Estonia and is the sous chef at Fäviken Magasinet, Sweden’s premier fine-dining restaurant. His visits to Estonia are much anticipated and highly valued by the foodies of his home country. This time, Pihel is about to create dinners from food that has been deemed by supermarkets to have gone off.

Pihel is convinced that if there is a lack of fresh produce, one should be creative. Having been raised in a family that was always resourceful in planning meals, he uses the same practice in the kitchen daily: “Obviously, me and my view of the world and working habits are largely shaped by my roots. It is my joy and privilege to be born and raised on an island. There is a peculiar rhythm of life there, which is also reflected in the way I cook. If the raw materials are scarce, one must use his creativeness – It motivates and forces one to think of something new and perhaps even make better things.”

According to the European Commission 88 million tons of food waste are created every year in European countries. This year’s TMW Trash Cooking dinners focus on sustainable development, teaching the public to better understand the “best before” markings, characteristics of various raw foods, and clever ways of economical consumption.

“Common sense tends to remain in the background and it is sad that people throw out food so light-heartedly. Our goal is to show that the food that usually ends up in the bin can actually be used to make a very tasty meal if one puts his mind to it,” promises the sustainable sous chef Peeter Pihel.

The dinner menu includes, among other things, “best before yesterday” toasted bread with whipped brains, buttermilk pancakes, algae, as well as beer malt. The meal is accompanied by selected wines and a special brew of Mjuk kombucha – a probiotic green tea beverage that has been fermented using the residues of organic HeyDay juices.

Trash Cooking Dinners take place on Wednesday, March 29th and Thursday, March 30th, at 6pm in Telliskivi Creative City, in the new Kitchen&Bar Kärbes at Vaba Lava premises. Dinner price is 65 EUR.

Dinners are on sale at TMW web store.

Trash Cooking Dinner partners are: Solaris Centre, Kärbes Kitchen & Bar, Telliskivi Creative City, Food Bank and “Lapsed söönuks” charity event, Umami, Mjuk kombucha + Heyday, ABC Supermarkets and suppliers of various raw foods.

Finnish music company Fullsteam’s 15th birthday party to be celebrated at Tallinn Music Week

The city festival Tallinn Music Week (TMW) taking place from 27th March to 2nd April will host the 15th birthday celebration of the Finnish music company Fullsteam on Friday, March 31st in Tallinn Culture Hub (Kultuurikatel). The performers at the event include Huoratron, Paperi T and DJ Kridlokk from Finland and Estonian NOËP.

The Helsinki-based music company Fullsteam, founded in 2002, started as a record label and has since expanded into concert promotions, festivals, artist booking and management. In its fifteen years in business, Fullsteam Records has published over a hundred records by acknowledged artists like Disco Ensemble, Ismo Alanko, Lapko and Rubik. Fullsteam Agency has promoted more than a thousand international artists from the world’s most renowned acts to marginal cult bands, represented numerous Finnish artists, and organized several events and festivals, including Sideways, one of the hippest new music festivals in Helsinki’s busy summer calendar.

“Fullsteam’s growth both in the sense of revenue as well as in the number of gigs has been exhausting. Last year was the best in Fullsteam’s history highlights including a sold out Sideways Festival, a record of daily visitors at Provinssi Festival, sold out arena concerts from Cheek to Justin Bieber, and several successful tours by domestic artists. Fullsteam Management has also been growing successfully and now represents over 20 clients. This is a great place to start our anniversary year”, says Heidi Aho, Managing Director of Fullsteam Agency.

The anniversary year’s opening event, Fullsteam’s 15th Birthday Party, hosted in Tallinn’s Kultuurikatel, presents live performances by Finnish electro extraordinaire Huoratron and Estonian singer-producer NOËP as well as DJ sets from the most promising talents in the Finnish rap scene, Paperi T and DJ Kridlokk.

Huoratron aka Aku Raski, is an alchemist of the esoteric art of sound able to get both hardcore punks and hipsters to line up for hugs after soul purging gigs. He’s both a scientist who crafts sounds and beats with the care of a 17th-century violin-maker, and a showman who moshes his way into the hearts of his audiences with music defined by a fearless attitude, a disrespect of the rules and a dedication to the cause.

A soothing variance to Huoratron’s tough sound and raw aesthetics will be complemented by smooth and soft vibes by NOËP aka Estonian singer-producer Andres Kõpper, who has already created quite a buzz both in Estonia and on an international scale with his infectious blend of stripped back electronica. At live shows, Kõpper can be seen armed with a keyboard, laptop and launch pad; transforming himself into a persuasive one-man army.

The birthday vibes will be provided also with DJ-sets by two of the most exciting and promising talents in the Finnish rap scene – Paperi T and DJ Kridlokk.

Fullsteam’s 15th Birthday Party: in cooperation with: Music Finland & Tallinn

More of the birthday party artists and the anniversary year events will be announced later.

Fullsteam’s 15th Birthday Party advance tickets for €10 are available from Estonian Piletilevi and Finnish Tiketti.

Kristjan Järvi presents “Radio Head Rewritten“ at Tallinn Music Week opening concert

Producer and conductor Kristjan Järvi will open the new music and urban culture festival Tallinn Music Week (TMW) on 30th of March at Kultuurikatel (Tallinn Creative Hub) together with world-class multi-genre artists Gene Pritsker, Bellatrix and Glasperlenspiel All Stars.

The Sunbeam production of TMW 2017 opening concert “Radio Head Rewritten” will take the audience on a journey through the different eras and influences of the club scenes around the Radio Head era until now. The event includes Steve Reich’s “Radio Rewrite”, a piece based on themes from Radiohead songs, as well as music written and performed by Gene Pritsker. Beatbox World Champion Bellatrix and Kristjan Järvi will be accompanied by an Estonian collective Glasperlenspiel All Stars. The artistic director and producer including visual- and sound design of the “Radio Head Rewritten” concept is Kristjan Järvi and his Estonian production company Sunbeam Productions.

Kristjan Järvi is one of the canniest and most innovative characters on today’s music scene. His work is characterised by the conductor’s unmistakable approach in taking a fresh look at the old, with concepts and presentation that transcend the borders of classical music. Järvi, the music director of Leipzig Radio Symphony Orchestra, founder and leader of the Baltic Sea Philharmonic and the founder and director of Grammy-nominated Absolute Ensemble, has collaborated with some of today’s brightest creative minds from composers and artists such as Joe Zawinul, Arvo Pärt, Steve Reich, or on one of his latest production called “Lost Tribes” with Hauschka, one of the highlight performers at this year’s TMW.

At the TMW opening concert, Järvi’s post-genre adventures will be accompanied by the Russian-born US composer, guitarist, rapper and DJ Gene Pritsker and UK based world champion of beat-box Bellatrix.

Gene Pritsker is the founder and leader of Sound Liberation – an eclectic ensemble combining hip-hop, chamber music, jazz and rock. He has written over six hundred compositions, including chamber operas, orchestral and chamber works, electro-acoustic music and songs for hip-hop and rock ensembles. He has also orchestrated major Hollywood movies, including “Cloud Atlas”.

Bellatrix is a musical explorer and songwriter from the UK. Primarily a bass player and vocalist, her broad palette of influences from hip-hop to jazz, folk, and the downright weird is apparent across her music and character. Known for her work with independent power-house girl band The Boxettes and psychedelic hip-hop outfit Dizraeli and The Small Gods, she now focuses on developing her solo artistry.

The international triumvirate will be accompanied by Estonian Glasperlenspiel All Stars, featuring renowned Estonian musicians and collectives Prezioso String Quartet, pianist and composer Kristjan Randalu, cross-genre drummer Hele-Riin Uib, percussionist Heigo Rosin, flautist Heili Rosin, jazz pianist Kirke Karja, bass player Mihkel Mälgand and saxophone player Martin Kuusk.

“Radio Rewrite” (2012) by Steve Reich will form the backbone of the concert, combining motives from Radiohead’s “Jigsaw Falling into Place” and “Everything in Its Right Place”. This five-part work is a symbiosis of Reich’s unique style and pop music, focusing not only on laconic borrowed melodies but also on harmonies and chords that form the foundation of Radiohead’s music.

Kristjan Järvi, Bellatrix and Gene Pritsker – this time aka Di.J.NoizePunk – will perform an electronic set “Rip Up the Stage” at Kultuurikatel as part of the follow-up concert programme in two halls. Among others, the acclaimed Scottish multi-instrumentalist C Duncan, and some of the most promising Estonian artists Maarja Nuut, Hendrik Kaljujärv and Mart Avi will perform.

TMW 2017 opening concert “Radio Head Rewritten” takes place on March 30th at Kultuurikatel. Doors open at 18.00, concert begins at 19.00.

Tallinn Music Week and the Estonian Contemporary Art Development Center introduce local and international arts and the daily lives of artists

The city festival Tallinn Music Week (TMW) taking place from 27th March to 2nd April will present a special programme of contemporary arts curated by the Estonian Contemporary Art Development Center (ECADC) for the third time. The gallery evening with extended opening hours called Tallinn Tuesday includes projects from both Estonian and international artists, group exhibitions and solo exhibitions. TMW Arts also presents a studio tour and a vote for future arts stars.

The gallery evening with a special programme and extended opening hours called Tallinn Tuesday on March 28th from 17:00 to 21:00 includes projects from both Estonian and international artists, group exhibitions and solo exhibitions. The gallery evening is a great opportunity to get to know the Estonian art gallery landscape with visits to both newcomers and the old greats, while also meeting the gallery owners and artists. Tallinn Tuesday invites to an exhibition opening at Okapi Gallery, a visit to Haus Gallery for the last day of the exhibition and to enjoy international solo and group exhibitions at EKA, Vaal and Temnikova & Kasela Galleries.

Okapi Gallery will present Mexico-born artist Niña Yhared’s performance “Via Baltic“. Residing in Vilnius, Lithuania, Yhared focuses her work on the almost 30-year-old civic demonstration, the Baltic Way, where 1 million people formed a 600 km human chain from Estonia to Lithuania, raising questions about nationality, freedom and borders in her performance.

Tallinn Tuesday is the last day of National Romantic exhibition “Tricolor Games” by pop artist Mall Nukke at Haus Gallery. The exhibition shows Estonian flag coloured works from 2014 to 2017, which depict games with tricolour marbles, tangled up fabrics and black latex costumes. The blue of the European Union and the colours of the Euro also bring some variety to the colour gamut.

OGH is a joint project by Greg Ponchak and Paige Früchtnicht, which combines fashion, art, design, curation and architecture. In the context of the exhibition at EKA Gallery, OGH explores the expressions of political action and militarization that are influenced by the Greco-Roman tradition and Neoplatonic Christian Asceticism.

“Euroland” (“Euroopamaa”) is an international group exhibition in the Temnikova & Kasela Gallery, curated by Oleg Frolov, which brings together different generations of artists from Tallinn, Moscow, Berlin and Vienna. Their works have a common interest in exploring the relationships between society and physical space.

The tour ends at Vaal Gallery with the exhibition by Laurentsius (Lauri Sillak) a fetishist aesthete, approaching his subjects with extreme devotion. For this exhibition, Laurentsius has taken on a challenge to paint landscapes, which is demonstrated through his larger-than-life paintings in this forgotten genre.

The projects and exhibitions (except Mall Nukke’s “Tricolor Games”) will remain open throughout the TMW at usual opening hours.

TMW Arts also includes tours to the galleries, artists’ studios and the ARS House.

On Friday, March 31st a special studio tour will present the studios of two contemporary artists: Kristi Kongi and Jaanus Samma. On Saturday, April 1st ARS building’s studios will open their doors to visitors. A building with a history dating back to 1944, offers participants of the studio tour plenty of space to explore. The tour visits the studios of up to four artists – for example, you can check out painter Merike Estna’s latest works in a working studio environment.

For a second year, TMW Arts hosts a joint event by NOAR.eu art environment and Estonian Academy of Arts to introduce the future talents of Estonian art to a wider audience and conduct an online voting campaign to elect the crowd’s favourite. The audience can vote during TMW and a selection of works from the competition will be displayed at Wabadus café.

TMW Arts is curated by the Estonian Contemporary Art Development Center (ECADC).
